Many of us are thinking of separating but we are holding on to the last holiday to ensure that we are not breaking our children’s heart. Can you relate to this?
If you can please continue reading. It can be hard to imagine a home we once built together with our partner, will no longer be the same as of the new year. The hopes and dreams we once had will no longer be the same. The feeling of sadness and grief we experience becomes hard to shake away. It is normal to feel angry, sad, disappointed, heartbroken, and frustrated. You are grieving and this will need time and patience.
Here are some tips to keep the peace and balance in the home:
- Remember to keep the children’s emotional wellbeing on top of your list.
- Separate your problems with your partner and focus on the children.
- Keep adult conversation away from the kids.
- Do not use a loud voice or inappropriate language in front of the kids.
- Do not make the kids a message carrier between both of you.
- Remember to respect each other’s space and boundaries.
- Remember, they may not have been a good partner but that does not make them a bad parent.
- If you feel overwhelmed or upset at your partner, walk away to a different room and take a deep breath. Wait and count up to 10, moving backwards. Wait 30 seconds between each counting and take a deep breath.
- Do not say anything when you are upset. Sit on it and you can reflect on it afterwards.
